The History of HP Colour LaserJet Printers

The HP Colour LaserJet printers would eventually end up revolutionising the printing industry and change the way that the average person was able to have access to quality printing devices. However, it was a long time coming for the line of HP LaserJet printers and it would take some great innovation as well as research and development on the part of HP before they were able to introduce the first HP Colour LaserJet printers and LaserJet toner.

Introducing the LaserJet Printer

In the early nineties, HP would experience much success with their line of LaserJet printers, especially with the introduction of the first printer with a 600 dpi output as well as Microfine toner. This was the LaserJet 4 and would eventually allow the average person to have access to publication quality printing devices in their homes. This was one of the biggest successes for the line up until that point, however it wouldn’t be for long. The company would company investing money heavily into research and development for the line of printers and eventually by 1994 ship its 10 millionth LaserJet printer.

HP’s First Colour LaserJet

However the greatest success for the line of LaserJet printers would not happen until later that year in September when the HP Colour LaserJet printer would be introduced as their first colour laser printer. This was a great success for the company and the line of printers as it would provide the industry with direction and allow consumers to have access to a quality of printing that was just not possible before then. This printer was able to produce this high quality of printing for less than 10 cents per page and proved to be one of the greatest successes for the line up until that time. The first Colour LaserJet printer boasted about its 2 ppm colour printing and 10 ppm black and white printing capabilities as well as a 12,50 sheet paper tray and 45 built in fonts. The printer would also offer a PCL 5 with colour.

Although the original sale price of USD $7,295 seems unusually high for today’s standards, the product was quite successful and HP would continue to be competitive pricing wise within the market to this day. The line of Colour LaserJet printers would ultimately phase out the older black and white models and go on to release a 5th generation of the line with the introduction of the LaserJet 5 family of printers.

Printing and Taking Care of Images

If you have a passion for images, you could probably use some tips on taking care of them, especially if you print a lot of them. If you use inkjet printers, color laser printers, dye sub, or some other technology, you should know something about handling and taking care of your prints.

No matter what technology you rely on, here are some things you should keep in mind when either handling prints or making prints.

2 Tips For Storing Printed Images

Easy isn’t always good when it comes to storing pictures. You don’t want to store your pictures in the attic or the basement, as these are often damp and the temperature will tend to fluctuate a great deal. Store your images in a cool dry place if you want to them to last.

Light causes images to fade. Be careful not to hang your pictures in direct sunlight. If you do, consider using anti-UV glass. Don’t touch the surface of the print itself, either.

2 Tips For Printing With Photo Paper

If you are printing from a computer, be sure to use paper that is recommended by the manufacturer of the printer. Sometimes, some aspect of the paper can hurt print quality, even though there is nothing wrong with the paper per se. For example, if ink balls up on the paper and makes your images to look spotty, use different paper or adjust the printer speed. Even though it may cost more, you’ll get better results when you use paper recommended by the manufacturer of the printer

You must let your prints dry for at least 1 hour before you try to stack them on top of each other. If you will put them under glass or in photo album pages, give them 24 hours to dry first.

Some Tips For Printing With Glossy Photo Paper

With glossy paper, the colors look more vibrant and the details look slightly sharper than matt paper. It’s not perfect though. It can cause glare with intense light sources, however. Be aware that glossy photo paper is more likely to attract and show dust and fingerprints and plan accordingly.

Some Tips For Printing With Matt Photo Paper

Matte prints may not be as sexy, but they do not reflect light as much and are easier to view. However, be aware that they will give the appearance of less detail and less vibrant colors.

5 Simple Ways to Extend The Life Of Your Printer

Computers and their counterparts can be tricky to keep up with. Make your purchases last by providing quality care and giving them the attention they need. Spending a few minutes every so often to provide routine maintenance for your printer can significantly extend its lifespan. If you keep this valuable piece of equipment in good shape, it may outlast several computers and provide quality print outs for years to come, plus you can do your part for the environment at the same time.

Keep it clean

Take a few minutes to wipe off the outside of your printer and the printer tray. Then, open your printer up and remove excess dust and bits of paper with a can of compressed air. If your printer suffers a particularly nasty jam, be sure to clean up after you’ve cleared the jam. Keeping the paper tray closed when the printer isn’t in use will also help reduce the dust inside. You should clean off your printer at least once a month.

Practice proper storage

You should store your printer in a cool, dry place. Avoid humidity at all costs. To keep your paper looking bright and white at all times, you should also store the unit out of the way of direct sunlight. If you keep your printer on a small shelf of your desk, make sure that there is enough room for the paper to stand up properly. If you need to bend the paper at an awkward angle to get it into the feed tray, you should consider a different place for your printer.

Use quality paper

This doesn’t mean that you have to spend a lot of money on your computer paper, only that you should take good care of it. Keep your paper flat and crease-free. Crumpled edges are just asking for a paper jam. You should note that most manufacturers also have minimum standards for the paper used in their printer. If you experience technical difficulties, they may refuse to help unless you are using the proper paper.

Replace the rollers

The feed rollers in your printer should be slightly rough to help them grab onto the paper and feed it through. Smooth, shiny rollers need to be replaced. If you have a laser printer, you can simply replace the rollers at the same time as the maintenance kit. For all other printers you should check manually.

Get to know your printer

Take a few moments to read through the owner’s manual. This is the best place to find specific tips and tricks for caring for your printer. Your manual should give you some basic maintenance information as well as a troubleshooting guide.

A Brief History of Epson Inkjet Printers

Epson has been making quality products for decades and the company has been involved in making computer related products since the early 1960’s.  Epson released their first computer printer, referred to as the EP-101, in 1968.  Prior to releasing the EP-101 Epson had gained international fame as the company that helped keep time at the 1964 Olympic games and up to that point Epson had a long and successful history as a watch manufacturer.

As with their wristwatch technology, Epson took their computer printer technology very seriously and soon Epson had captured almost 60% of the computer printing market with their line of dot matrix printers.  Epson was one of the first companies to introduce colour to dot matrix printing and they continued making printing advances until Epson had developed a way to bring printing technology within everyone’s reach.

In 1993 Epson developed a method of printing referred to as piezoelectric crystal printing which was a printing method that allowed printing to be done without first having to heat the ink.  In 1994 Epson used this new technology to create the inkjet printer which was a cost effective printer that the home user could afford.  Epson had brought printing home for the public to enjoy and even with this major step in home computing technology Epson was still not done inventing and creating.

In 1998 the Epson Stylus Color 800 color inkjet printer was chosen by NASA to be the printer used for the STS-95 mission.  In an environment as critical as a space mission Epson was the manufacturer chosen to provide the method for printing critical documents.  Epson went on in 1999 to create the Epson Stylus Color 900 which was the fastest color inkjet printer on the market when it was released.  Epson was also one of the first companies to bring all in one printer, scanner, copier, and fax devices to market that could print in color.

Soon after the initial success of their 720 dpi resolution color inkjet printer was released Epson branched out into the computer technology market making scanners and other computer accessories that had features that were well ahead of most of the competition.  Epson was one of the first companies to release a single pass colour scanner in 1989 and they continue to make advances in the area of LCD displays.

Epson continues to make advances in printing technology and the company has recently made several technological advances in the area of photograph printing for the home.  As Epson continues to develop newer products for the home computing environment, and better printing solutions for business as well, they remain one of the top printer manufacturers in the world.

5 ways to make your inkjet more efficient:

Saving money is what it’s all about these days, and one way you can do that is by making your inkjet printer more efficient.  There are several ways to go about doing this and the more tips you implement, the more efficient it is to run and use your printer.  These tips don’t cost any extra money; they just take a little getting used to and habit forming techniques.

Use the right cartridge: If your printer designates what printer cartridge you want to use, and you are going to be printing only black and white documents, make sure you are using the cartridge with the black ink.  This will help you to avoid replacing the cartridges that use both black and color just because the black ink runs out.  If you normally use only the black ink, keep that one in your printer unless you specifically need color.

Recycle paper: Sometimes printing jobs get botched.  Instead of throwing away that paper, use it for a note pad or for printing inter-office or personal documents on the other side of the paper.  Printer paper use coincides with printer costs, so be frugal with both!

Keep it clean: It should be a normal practice to keep your printer clean inside and out.  The inks from the cartridges can sometimes begin to run or blend.  Prevent botched printing jobs by cleaning the inside of your printer on a regular basis.  Also keeping the printer well aligned will help from wasting printer use too.

Consider refillable cartridges: Using cartridges that you can refill can save you not only money, but from constant frustration.  Refillable ink costs only a fraction of ink cartridges and is fairly simple to do.  Since no one ever runs out of all of the colors at once, and the only other option is buying an entirely new cartridge, refilling them yourself adds up to a lot of money!  That is money in your pocket.

Consider combining options: If you use a printer, a fax, a scanner and a copier all on a regular basis, you may want to consider combining them into one product.  The downside to this is if you need something repaired, the whole system goes in.  Barring that, a lot of money and time can be saved by using one machine for a variety of needs.  You not only save on the price of the machine, but you also save having multiple power cords.  There is also need for less space when you combine your printer with other office machinery.

5 Arguments to Pick a Laser Printer

There are primarily two types of printers available on the market today for most people: the inkjet printer and the laser printer. Although there are many similarities between these two types of printers there are also some big differences that make for noteworthy consideration and which make a laser printer the better choice.

Faster Printing
There’s no question that we live in a day and age where many times doing things at a slow, leisurely pace simply is not an option. When it comes to printing, the faster you can printer, the better. Often last minute printing jobs can become the norm and hands down laser printers are faster than inkjet printers because laser technology utilizes a drum to roll the print onto the page whereas inkjet uses a process that puts ink onto the page in dots, which causes the page to be wet when it leaves the printer.

More Efficient Printing
The manner in which you print matters almost as much as what you print. When it comes down to choosing between a laser printer and an inkjet, the laser printer is the better choice because it offers options on what type of print out you want. With an inkjet printer you can only typically use the printer in the mode it is set to.

Quieter machines
The construction of laser printers makes them quieter because there is less activity that takes place during printing. The drum rotates around in a circle as each page goes through the printer. This method is not only quieter than the inkjet but it is faster and more efficient and saves more energy than the inkjet, which makes the laser printer the better choice.

Print Quality Options
Print quality options make the laser printer the best choice hands down. With a laser printer you can select from a variety of printing options which save toner, printer faster and offer printing quality variety that you simply cannot achieve with an inkjet.

Long Lasting Cartridge
Initially, it may seem that an inkjet is the better choice. Inkjet printers are, after all, significantly cheaper than laser printers. The same is true for toner. Inkjet cartridges are also less expensive than laser toner cartridges. This is only an initial consideration however. If you further evaluate the costs of toner and the amount of copies as well as length of time you can use them, the laser printer has a long lasting cartridge that actually averages out to less per page than inkjet.

When you take all of these arguments into consideration, there is no question that the laser jet is the better choice for a printer. The initial expense to purchase a laser jet and the laser toner cartridge may be more than the less expensive inkjet but this expense should pay for itself in the number of prints you get before you have to buy another cartridge and the time you save printing. However if you’re set on getting a inkjet be sure to check out these considerations when buying an inkjet printer.
